In our 𝒉our people series, we sit down with members past and present to talk about the stories behind their startups. This time, we turned the questions on someone a little closer to home: Ar. Areeba Siddiqui, Architect and Founder of Hour Space itself, who's been building the space since 2018.

How did it all start?

I wasn't in Mumbai when the idea for Hour Space first took shape. I was thousands of miles away, in Scotland, in the middle of building an entirely different life. It was 2016, I'd just finished

my education, and I'd taken a job with a company that happened to work out of a coworking space. I didn't go looking for the idea; it simply found me. Something about it stayed with me. Coworking wasn't just a trend I'd stumbled into; it was a genuine answer to a problem I understood deeply, especially for a city like Mumbai, where commercial space comes at a premium and ambition often outpaces square footage. Mumbai, restless and full of people building things of their own, felt like exactly where this idea belonged. So I brought it home.

Rooted In Colaba:

There's a reason Hour Space feels the way it does: it was born and raised in the same neighbourhood it now calls home. Colaba isn't just an address on a signboard for me; it's woven into the identity of the place. That closeness to the community has shaped almost every decision I've made along the way, right down to the smallest details.

I never set out to build a place people simply passed through on their way to work. I wanted somewhere people would feel genuinely welcomed the moment they walked in, comfortable enough to stay a while, inspired enough to keep coming back. For the entrepreneurs, freelancers, and teams who've made Hour Space part of their routine, that's exactly what I hoped it would become: an extension of home, where real work happens alongside real relationships, and where ideas are given the room they need to grow. It's that feeling of familiarity that makes Hour Space more than a coworking space to me. It's a place where everyone belongs.

The Philosophy Behind It:

Long before our first member walked through the door, I made a decision that would quietly

shape everything that followed: to own the space outright, rather than lease and sublet it the easier way. It wasn't the fastest route, but it was the one built to last, and that's really the throughline behind everything at Hour Space: sustainability, not just in the environmental sense, but in how the whole business is put together.

I'll be the first to say innovation was never really the goal for me; endurance was. I wanted a space resilient and adaptable enough to grow with its market, take on new ideas as they come, and keep improving without ever losing sight of what it stands for. Nothing here chases trends. I've built it slowly, deliberately, with the intention of it still meaning something to this community years from now.

Advice for Fellow Builders:

If you ask me what eight years in business has taught me, I'll give you one answer without hesitation: be local first, then grow beyond. Every business worth building starts by solving a real problem for the people closest to it. Long before you think about expansion, put in the work to build something that genuinely holds up within your own reach: validate the idea, get to know your customers properly, and keep refining until you've earned their trust.

When a concept proves itself locally, growth no longer feels like a stretch but becomes a natural next step, not because you're chasing scale, but because you've built something worth scaling. Confidence isn't built by thinking bigger; it's built by executing consistently, learning from your market, and creating value where you are. Once you have that foundation, reaching beyond your neighbourhood, your city, or even your country becomes far more achievable.
