A Trip Down The Cafe Lane Near Hour Space
Colaba's coffee scene has changed a lot in the last few years. It's not just Irani cafés and filter coffee anymore, somewhere along the way, this stretch of South Mumbai quietly turned into one of the city's best neighbourhoods for specialty coffee. And most of it is a five to ten minute walk from Hour Space.
Subko: Coffee, Bread, and Chocolate Under One Roof:
Subko started as a specialty coffee roastery with a simple idea: the Indian subcontinent deserved a real seat at the global coffee table, not just as a source of raw beans but as a place doing serious, thoughtful coffee work. The name itself comes from "subcontinent," and the whole brand is built around that identity, sourcing beans from farms across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, and beyond.
Their Colaba outpost, The Cacao Mill, takes it even further. Housed in a former textile mill on 2nd Pasta Lane, it's Mumbai's first bean-to-bar chocolate factory, where you can actually watch the process: raw cacao pods, roasting, grinding, the whole thing, before sitting down for a coffee or a baked good in a sunlit, double-height space that still carries the bones of the old mill.
Araku: Coffee With a Bigger Purpose:
Araku's flagship Mumbai café sits inside Sunny House, a century-old building from 1897, right in
the middle of Colaba. The brand itself goes further back than the café: Araku coffee is grown through a regenerative farming model in the Eastern Ghats, one that's won international recognition for how it supports farmers and soil health simultaneously. It's coffee with a cause built right into the sourcing, not bolted on as marketing.
Inside, the café doubles as a full slow-food experience: a modbar for coffee, an open kitchen, a small bookshop tucked into a mezzanine, and a bakery and cocktail bar upstairs. It's the kind of place built for lingering, whether that's an early cappuccino or a glass of wine as the evening winds down.
Third Wave Coffee: The Reliable Favourite:
Third Wave has become something of a go-to across Mumbai for people who want consistently good coffee without the theatre. Their Colaba outlet on Wodehouse Road fits right into that identity: straightforward specialty coffee, a solid food menu, and a space that works equally well for a quick espresso or a longer catch-up over pastries.
Concu: Colaba's Newest Café, With Serious Pedigree:
Concu is the newest name on this list, but it's not new to the café world. After fourteen years building a cult following in Hyderabad, the patisserie-café brand recently opened its first Mumbai outlet on Pasta Lane, right in the heart of Colaba's old quarter. The space itself is worth the visit alone: a former print shop with triple-height ceilings, exposed stone walls, and timber beams that shift the mood from a sunlit café by day to a cocktail bar by evening.
Founded by Sahil Taneja and Swati Upadhyay, Concu built its reputation on desserts and coffee first, and that shows in the menu: inventive coffee, a proper pastry counter, and an all-day format that moves easily from breakfast to dinner without missing a beat.
Mag Street Café: A Quiet Colaba Favourite:
Tucked into a quiet bylane, Mag Street Café comes from the same team behind The Table and Magazine Street Kitchen: Gauri Devidayal and Jay Yousuf, both well-known names in Mumbai's food and hospitality scene. Their Colaba café keeps things simple: fresh bakes, a well-thought-out food menu, and a striking black facade with a gabled roof that makes it easy to spot even on a street full of charming old buildings.
All Just Minutes From Hour Space
What ties all of this together is how close it all is. Subko, Araku, Third Wave, Concu, and Mag Street Café are all within a short walk of Hour Space; easy enough to duck out for a coffee between meetings, or to take a short walk around the neighbourhood.
Colaba has always been a neighbourhood people came to for its old-world cafés. Now it's just as much a reason to come for the new ones, and they're all pretty much in our backyard.
